As Quincy’s children’s dentist, we’re obviously very interested in anything that can be done to establish a healthy, happy smile right from the get-go. Keeping teeth healthy is much, much better than having to address cavities and other problems after the fact. The news that there’s a probiotic pill that can stop cavities from forming sounds great, but we want local parents to be very clear that this technology is not available yet.
Despite the headlines promising an end to all cavities, the truth is that what is being reported is simply research results found by some University of Florida scientists. They’ve done great work in furthering our understanding of bacteria in the mouth and how that impacts cavity development. It appears that a probiotic treatment may be a viable approach to preventing cavities, but that treatment has yet to be developed and tested – two vital steps before we have anything like that to offer to Quincy’s children.
Instead, if we want to focus on cavity prevention – and we do! – the key is making consistent use of the tools already available to us. That means having the kids brush their teeth regularly. Flossing is also so important. Making brushing and flossing part of the daily routine will do a lot to cut back on cavity development.
You’ll also want to watch your children’s diets. Many foods contain a surprising amount of sugar. Don’t let the fact something’s made from fruit fool you: many juices and smoothies are packed with sugar. You don’t want that lingering on your kid’s teeth.
Regular dental cleanings are a must for children. Keep their smile happy and healthy. Our family friendly dental office and specially trained staff make accessing dental care in Quincy for kids super simple: call us for an appointment and see for yourself.
