Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. You can have a single dental implant, to replace one missing tooth, or, if you’re missing several teeth that are adjacent to each other, a small series of dental implants can be used together. One of the reasons people really enjoy dental implants is that they are a permanent solution to missing teeth – rather than dentures, which come in and out, dental implants stay in place.
It’s important to understand that while dental implants are permanent, the gum and underlying structure of your jaw can deteriorate badly if you don’t care for it. As your Quincy dentist, our priority is the health of your entire mouth! Once you’ve had dental implants installed, it’s very important that you brush your teeth regularly. Electric toothbrushes have proven to do a slightly better job at providing the care your gums need; that being said, a traditional handheld toothbrush is better than none at all. Make sure you brush twice a day, for two minutes each time.
Flossing can be tricky when you have dental implants. Many of the patients at our Quincy dental practice have reported the most satisfying results from using a water flossing tool on the lowest pressure setting. If you want a traditional floss, it’s important to pick one that doesn’t shred and leave fragments behind after use. We’ll be happy to discuss flossing products with you to help you choose the one that best meets your needs.
After having dental implants put in, it is a good idea to schedule regular cleanings. Twice a year is ideal for most patients. You can have these cleanings done here in our Quincy dental office!
