The choices you make in your daily diet have an impact on the health of your teeth. Today we’re going to focus on positive choices: foods and beverages you may wish to consider including in your diet in order to boost your dental health. Protecting our tooth enamel is so important!
There are four types of food generally recognized to help protect tooth enamel. Cheese, chicken or other meats, nuts and milk are all rich sources of calcium and phosphorus. Calcium and phosphorus are two critical minerals our bodies need to maintain strong, healthy bones and to complete many other vital body functions. Most people don’t get enough calcium in their diet. When this happens, the body draws the calcium it needs from our bones and teeth, weakening them. For healthy teeth, you want to be sure you’re getting enough calcium. If this is an area where you’ve had difficulty, talk to your Quincy dentist or physician for suggestions.
Your Quincy dentist will also tell you to eat lots of apples, pears, and other crunchy fruit. Vegetables, particularly raw, are also a great dietary choice for promoting dental health. The reason these foods make the list is because chewing them takes work, and this work means your salivary glands will work hard, producing lots of saliva that naturally rinses particulate matter away from your teeth.
As an added bonus, a daily diet that includes some or all of these foods can help quell the hunger cravings that lead to choosing sugary, unhealthy snacks! So remember, cheese, chicken or other meats, nuts and milk to help protect your enamel, and not-acid fruits and veggies for an overall healthy mouth!
