“I don’t mean to make a big deal out of nothing,” Libby said, “but the thought of going to the dentist freaks me out. I mean, like anxiety attack freaks me out. I haven’t even been able to call for an appointment.” Libby has some dental issues, including two missing teeth that cause her to feel very self conscious. “Do I want to get that fixed?” she asked. “Yes. Am I willing to visit a dentist to have that happen? Not so much.”
Things changed when Libby’s best friend Anne introduced her to the idea of sedation dentistry. “She’s a nervous person, too,” Libby said, “but when she got a toothache, she didn’t suffer with it. She went down to the Quincy dentist and got her tooth fixed. I asked her, “How did you do that?” She told me, “I slept through it!”
Sedation dentistry has been developed to help patients who have mild to severe anxiety regarding dental care get the help they need. A very highly trained dentist works with a team who provides calming medications before and during the process. There are different levels of sedation; some merely calm the patient so they can relax enough for dental care to be done, while for other people it is best for them to sleep through the procedure.
Your Quincy dentist will work closely with you to determine which level of sedation is best for you. There are multiple factors to consider as part of that process, including your overall health and well being as well as your anxiety levels.
“Sedation dentistry was a game changer for me,” Libby said. “I’ve had both of my missing teeth replaced, and I’m going back to have some other issues addressed. Now I can smile with confidence – and all I had to do was go to sleep!”
