Kylie Jenner recently shared some of her favorite beauty tips, including the use of coconut oil to whiten teeth. As your Quincy dentist, we have to say, we like Kylie Jenner, but she’s wrong about coconut oil.
Rinsing the teeth with coconut oil – also known as oil pulling – is a traditional dental hygiene practice that goes back thousands of years, especially in India, where it is associated with Ayurvedic medicine. Research has shown that the routine of swishing coconut oil around one’s mouth for a prolonged period of time, then spitting it out and rinsing the mouth with water, does, in fact, reduce the bacterial load in one’s mouth, reducing the rate of tooth decay. Coconut oil can be used to enhance your regular dental hygiene routine, which should include brushing and flossing.
What oil pulling does not do is whiten your teeth. Coconut oil is not an effective treatment for treating teeth stained by red wine, coffee, or tobacco. As part of our cosmetic dentistry service, we offer a range of whitening treatments. Our approach is highly individualized, and when you meet with one of our dentists, you’ll be presented with the whitening solution that’s most ideal for your unique concerns.
All procedures are done in our comfortable, relaxing Quincy family dental practice. A range of sedation services are available for patients who are nervous about seeing the dentist. Best of all, having your teeth whitened by the dentist actually works. You’ll have a brighter, whiter smile instantly. You’ll look and feel great!
