One of the primary reasons people avoid getting the dental care they need is that they’re afraid of treatment. Some people get nervous about visiting the dentist, other people worry about potential pain. Sedation dentistry gives people a way to access dental care without fear. We’ve heard people say they aren’t interested in sedation dentistry because they don’t want to be ‘knocked out’. It’s important to understand that you can have sedation dentistry without being put completely under. There are other options!
Any time medication is used to reduce anxiety and stress for a patient, it’s known as sedation dentistry. Oral sedation involves the use of medications that leave the patient fully conscious and able to cooperate with their treatment, yet they’re unaware of any physical sensations and many times do not even remember having treatment at all. Laughing gas – more formally known as nitrous oxide – is another treatment that can reduce anxiety while facilitating dental care. A patient being treated with nitrous oxide maintains consciousness while having anxiety and fear eliminated; many patients report feeling like they slept through the procedure although in truth they were awake.
General anesthesia, which does result in the patient losing consciousness, is only one of the many types of sedation dentistry available in Quincy. This option is reserved for patients who need extensive dental work done or who have extreme levels of anxiety. We work with an experienced, licensed anesthesiologist on our staff who focuses exclusively on keeping patients safe and comfortable while they’re under. Prior to any dental treatment that requires anesthesia, our anesthesiologist is available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Some health conditions make sedation of any type more difficult for the patient to experience safely.
